The Story: County Gutters Completes Guttering Overhaul at Historic St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington

County Gutters has been contracted by the M & J Construction Group to carry out a major refurbishment of the guttering and rainwater pipes at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. The hospital, famous for the discovery of penicillin by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928 and its close ties with the Royal Family, required a complete replacement of its outdated guttering system on the Mint Wing. This historic hospital, which has been a key part of medical history, demanded a solution that would meet modern standards while respecting its heritage.

The project involved replacing the original cast iron rainwater pipes with a more durable and efficient powder-coated aluminium system. The challenge was heightened by the fact that the old pipes ran through stone plinths all the way down the building, requiring the careful removal of the old system to avoid damage to the stonework. Additionally, the original gutter was smaller than the new system, which now needed to accommodate increased water flow due to the more extreme weather conditions that have become more frequent. The new powder-coated aluminium system offers greater capacity and requires far less maintenance than the original cast iron, providing a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution for this historic institution.
